Ray West & Kool Keith - Destiny's Child (feat. 3rd Eye) by Fat Beats

Red Apples 45's Couple Of Slices pairs the production of Ray West and the lyrics of the legendary Kool Keith. The original cover illustration by Greg Mac depicts a futuristic pizzeria set in outer space, a perfect setting for the wizard Kool Keith to serve up slices to hungry space travelers. Keith's wizardry intertwines with Ray West's melodies to create a mood of sarcastic romance at the same time setting rappers straight. Proudly recorded in the Bronx, all the writing and concepts were done together in the studio. Mixed with great detail by Phil Moffa at Butcha Sound NYC with features from AG of DITC, Cormega, 3rd Eye & Dyin Breed. #GameRecognized

Red Pill - Day Drunk by Mello Music Group

From the upcoming "Day Drunk - EP" 11/27/2015 produced by Red Pill Detroit’s Red Pill released his solo Mello Music debut album “Look What This World Did To Us” earlier this year. The record was striking because of it’s straight-forward, intellectually broken, Bukowski-like realism. The photos were serious, brooding, and the lyrics were heavy and genuine. Enter the Day Drunk EP. Red Pill starts on top of a clock-ticking, mind-mesmerizing, introductory track from UK producer Paul White. After a philosopher-king monologue, the Zen Buddhist meditative chant begins – “Don’t work, just party - you’ll be alright. Don’t try so hard. Just live your life.” But Pill never leaves you insightfully dumb, with lines like “I think we need a new religion / wound up, bound up in submission / getting lost in the mission / false definitions/ be causing derision / all these people talkin’ competition / all these people talkin’ is division…” And then the record gets green lit. You may recognize the next Alex Goose-produced track from Silicon Valley. Red Pill lays hardworking slacker ambition bare in one dumb, drunk, punch over the energetic beat. The song is as ludicrously lavish as Scorsese’s “Wolf Of Wall Street.” The album moves into happy-hour heartstrings unfurling with a song for those who’d rather stay inside, those who, “outside of their mind, don’t know what’s real.” This is for those who can never fall asleep without a helper, “a little gin and seltzer,” as Red Pill puts it. Blu joins the 3 o’clock session, laying bars over an Oddisee-produced, rainy kitchen window thought piece. But, like any good rap savior, Red Pill pulls us back up from the depths with Exile’s upbeat “Porn & Milk.” The Day Drunk EP is a record to wash away the feeling when your cash is gone. Today, Red Pill is on some “love life” shit. Bottoms up. Day Drunk begins now. #GameRecognized

Mr. Lif - Return Of The B-Boy (prod. El-P) by Mello Music Group

The B-Boy has returned. Legendary Boston MC Mr. Lif has signed a multi-album deal with Mello Music Group for 2016 & 2017. His first new project will be out by early next year, but to hold fans over, MMG will reissue his classic album I Phantom on November 27th. For those new to this classic, I Phantom showcases production by El-P, Edan, Insight, DJ Fakts One, and NASA. Add to that guest features from Aesop Rock, Jean Grae, and Akrobatik. “I’ve been very active musically for years but I haven’t been putting records out,” Lif says. “I’ve been touring the world with Thievery Corporation and otherwise living in the studio, constantly making songs.” Lif’s new slate of music is as progressive and searing as ever. If you’re even vaguely familiar with post-millennium underground hip-hop, you know all about the MC born Jeffrey Haynes. Over the course of four solo EPs and albums, Lif established himself as one of hip-hop’s most brilliant thinkers and triumphantly defiant voices. He spoke truth to power like few others: indicting racism, the inequities of late Capitalism, and political corruption. His new songs figure to define this new age, by highlighting what has changed and how much regrettably has stayed the same. The partnership with Mello came out about organically. The link between the former Def Jux linchpin and Mello was obvious: they’re both known for uncompromised raw music with integrity, dedicated to both tradition and progression. Set for release on November 27th, Lif’s classic debut album titled, I Phantom is the start to a long partnership. Lif promises his new work will be the most soul baring of his career — records that chronicle his ups and downs and the ebbs and flows of life. "It was a very intentional decision to remain unsigned by any record label until I was absolutely ready. That personal journey spanned from 2007 to 2015. I needed to step back and gain perspective on a great many things", Lif says. "I waited the right amount of time. I grew. I recorded an abundance of new material over the years, found the right record label, and now it's time to come back and start round two of my career." #GameRecognized

I Self Devine "What Can I Do, Where Can I Turn?" [PROD BY ANT] by rhymesayers

One week from today, on Saturday, August 1st 2015, I Self Devine will officially celebrate the 10-Year Anniversary of "Self Destruction" by performing the full album + more at 7th Street Entry (701 1st Avenue North, Minneapolis). Do not miss this special one time only event. Get your tickets NOW: bit.ly/ISelf0801 Self Destruction only had one official 12” single for the album, “Ice Cold” (b/w “All I Know” and the single-only cut, “Such Is Life”). This was around the time when 12” singles were starting to lose a bit of steam and the focus was shifting more toward full-lengths and digital releases. However, there was a second single for the album planned. “Overthrow”, an album favorite for many, was planned to be the A-side with “Everyday Shit” on the B-side. There was also a plan to include an unreleased ANT produced track on the single as well. When we first stumbled upon the master for this single, it didn’t have a track listing, so there was some debate about its origins, specifically the title. Through that process, it was dubbed “What Can I Do, Where Can I Turn?”, based off the hook. However, further discussion with I Self Devine revealed that this was initially intended to be a remix for the song “Transitions” from the Semi.Official project, but it was never used. As for the track itself, I Self said, “I don’t know what the sample is, but the blues guitar invokes a certain kind of emotion. It reminds of a smoky hickory wood type (of song)…like when you look at the fingers you can tell they’ve worked in the field, just like, it’s been worn in. That good worn in, like you’ve lived some life." He adds with a laugh, “It’s kind of like with the Blues…if you’re young and liking the Blues then you’re definitely reincarnated cause you ain’t lived enough, had enough heartbreak, you haven’t been broke enough…” Immediately from the song’s start, you feel that heavy Blues essence. Before I Self speaks a word you can feel the weight of struggle from the music, but at the same time those same sounds are providing a sliver of hope. When I Self steps to the mic, he strongly expresses thoughts of frustration, looming death, and mounting struggles, “I’m up late haunted by the visions of death/snatching my breath, paralyzed inside my physical flesh/I'm dead tired eyes burning, having ill hallucinations/Yet the words keep spilling thru my pen, flow gracefully/Acute taste for weed, Hennessy drowning my misery/Will my death be known or a mystery, is mystery/It’s hard living hard, giving all that you got/Instead of life, I’m dreaming how I’m going get taking out/Stabbed by your friend or enemy/Family with envy and jealousy/Tortured inside a police fortress for felonies…” If you ever heard Atmosphere’s “You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having” album then you heard a sneak peak of this track. Near the end of “Angerface” when Slug says, “So I waited till she slept then I stepped into traffic…” and the song breaks down in to a quick traffic scene and the car is playing this song, right at the hook. According to ANT, he thought this was a great song, so when he heard it wasn’t getting released he made a point to get it heard in some little way at the very least. That’s why he decided to use it on “Angelface”. ANT also says that it was after making this track, as a Semi-Official remix, that him and I Self Devine decided to work on Self Destruction together. So, although this song didn’t make the album, it was ultimately the catalyst to set it in motion. When asked about the tone and concept of the song, I Self explains, “To me (it) was questioning and pondering…being at a pivotal fork in the road with many different options…(so) where do I go? Sometimes you’re just overwhelmed and you just want to lie down.” Accompanying Art: This is a collage piece from I Self Devine that he created around the time of Self Destruction. #GameRecognized
